Although this isn't my truck, mine is currently at the Ford dealer, it is making the same exact noise although just a tad louder and between 1200-2000 rpm. The dealership is telling me this is normal for 6.0's. If the vanes are fully closed the noise is really loud. If the vanes are open the noise doesn't happen. The diesel techs don't see any soot on any of the connections or bellows on the up-pipe.
Has anyone ever had this exact same noise happen and if so what did you do to fix it? Thanks!

Mine does the same thing to an extent after I replaced the turbo. I have yet to find anything wrong with mine. I checked everywhere I thought it could leak and it functions fine
Do you know if yours was doing this before and after the turbo replacement or just after? And was the replacement turbo a used one or a new one?
The noise is annoying and darned loud. But, the noise does seem to go away some (but not entirely) after the truck is fully warmed up.
The only things I can thing of that it might be are:
1. Up-pipe leak
2. Coked up thrust or journal bearings in the turbo
3. Maybe, just maybe the turbine wheel blades are jacked up a little causing the air rushing over them to sound weird. I checked the compressor blades and they were perfect.
4. One or more vanes are kind of wonky (VGT still reads perfect though)
Mine didn't sound like that until I put a turbo in with 10000 on it. Cleaned it made sure it was good and put it in. My old turbo wasn't functioning. It was an immediate sound change. You get the howling as we'll as the standard turbo hiss. When I first drove it and heard it. I went back and checked everything and it was all ok. All connections good no leaks new riffraff boots. And no lack of boost so as for now I'm Gona let her sing lol
I guess if I get it back from the Ford dealer and they find no problems I'll pull the down pipe off and see if I can check the turbine blades as well as look for oil. Might just pull the turbo off and rebuild it for the heck of it if I'm feeling confident.
Got the truck back from the dealer and was finally able to make a video of the noise.
Does everybody else's truck with a non-stock exhaust system sound like this? Ford tech says that's normal.
