New diesel owner looking for some info/help? Currently approaching 9k miles. My first oil change was done by the dealer. I was looking at my owners manual on what weight of oil to use. I am thinking of going to a 5w-40 oil but all seems to be synthetic. Do i need to do anything special if i am going to change from a conventional to synthetic?
Nothing special needed. My first oil change I switched to 5w40, same oil I ran in my 7.3L for years.
Is it necessary to switch to 5w40? Maybe not, but running 5w40 covers a very broad range of operating conditions.... most of which my truck sees on a continual basis.
I've been using the shell T-6 5-40 synthetic for years now for the ability to remain worry free and advantageous in harsh conditions (I freely admit that using a cheap store brand product certified for cj-4 use of most any viscosity would be fine as well).
It's also priced in the middle of the spectrum for a "premium" oil. I go through a lot of it so cost is a factor. If you don't drive much the cost becomes a non issue.
So, use the motorcraft oil and fuel filters, your choice oil, and do it when the truck calls for it, and you'll be in great shape.
Get yourself a 5 gal bucket and trim it to fit under the running boards. Use it to collect the oil (3 gallons of it) and also the drain from the filter.
Always buy 4 gallons of your choice oil. Refill with 13 qts and you're good to go. Takes 20min max when you get the hang of it.
I just got a 2016 F350 6.7 PSD and am planning on switching to Rotella T6 5-40 on my first oil change. I'm only at 1,500 miles and plan on changing at 5K. I just want to say thanks to the forum members here, the last diesel I had was a 93 F250 dually... a lot has changed since then and there is a ton of good info here.
I've run the Shell T-6 in my past 3 trucks. Always in the winter or cold months. Sometimes I'll switch back to plain Shell Rotella in the summer months. I've also had the dealer do the occasional oil change and he uses Motorcraft oil. Trucks have run fine.
I do think the trucks start easier in cold weather with the Synthetic oil. It flows so much better when cold.
