and was curious as to what type of oil to use? synthetic or regular old oil? what weight? i live in tx so i'm not worried about cold weather. i think ford recommends 15w40?
You'll find many discussion threads in this forum about oil. Make sure you use the Diesel formulation of the oil you choose (CH or CI).
I use the Shell Rotella T. Its fairly priced, has a very good reputation, and stays pretty clean for my 3500-5000 mile change intervals. I'd previously used Mobil 1 on all my vehicles (still do no my little rice-burner), but $75 an oil change just for the oil is a little too steep for me without a strong return on the investment. I am planning on picking up a by-pass filter to help keep the oil in the engine cleaner.
As for the type of filter. Go to your local auto parts store and open up a few of the filters that will fit your truck. Look at the patent number on all of them. 90% of them are the EXACT same filter. Motorcraft and STP are the same and I paid $5 less for the STP! Don't take anyone's word for it and go look for yourself. I did.
If you live where it gets really cold or you tow a lot then synthetic may be worth it for you. I use Rotella T here in Vegas but I may switch to a synthetic during the winter since I spend a fair amount of time in Utah.
Thats a good point about the synthetic in cold weather... the 15w40 is gets pretty thick. The diesel formulation oils takes care of soot control & foaming to my knowledge.
