48 F1 Brakes Pull

48 F1 with stock front end. Have adjusted shoes to factory manual spec., all around, and brakes are really strong but under hard braking, pull to the left. Have only slight play in the steering, wondering where to go first to troubleshoot. Thanks for any help.

Hi Oneye,

Other things to look at are the spring shackle bushings and/or kingpins being worn and the total play in all components of steering and suspension causing the pull.

How long has the brake fluid and wheel cylinders been in the truck?

Possible collapsed brake hose on the right front.

The adjustment procedure in the manual is pretty lacking in detail. When you adjust til the shoes drag, you need to push on the pedal a couple times to re-center the shoes, then continue adjusting. If you don't re-center, one shoe will drag way before the other and give a false reading.

Not sure about how long the fluid has been there. The P.O. said the brakes had all been done during his ownership but no dates given. Everything looks to be in good shape -- springs, linings, hoses, and I've checked the m.c. fluid level, but not put any in a sight glass. My first thought was to back off on the left front adjustment, which seems to be the one that's ahead of the others. Parking brake is good, replaced all that. Also replaced the front springs, shackles and bushings seem good and tight. Is there any way to check for kingpin wear other than re-doing them?

What does the drums look like? I had a similar problem when I bought my truck. Turned of the rebuilt brakes had a small ridge on one of the front drums. The shoes contacted the ridge and not the drum causing it to pull dramatically. A bit of hand sanding on the ridge brought it down to level with the rest of the drum. No more problem.

Hoses can look good on the outside and be collapsed on the inside, and some aftermarket rubber hoses dont last long. I dont think China knows how to make rubber yet, anything from them made of rubber seems to crack or fall apart pretty quickly.

pbsdaddy, good thought, will check that L.F. drum. And 2x on the China parts ... On my Olds, just had a CV joint failure on an axle from China (through Rock Auto) with less that 10K miles on it. The chassis looked like someone had put a cherry bomb in a one-pound can of grease and lit the fuse -- took hours to clean up. Replaced it with AC Delco. But realistically, it's not easy to get parts that aren't made or assembled in China or Mexico or Thailand these days ... whatever happened to Made in the USA?
