I've got a 03 ranger XLT 5 speed , 4.0 extended cab. other than the cd player sucking( they ordered me a new one), 2 things that I need y'all's help on when i shift gears get this awful clunk like the back lash would need to be adjusted in a rear, except its comming from my transfercase. you can feel it as well as hear it . and anywhere after 3 grand i get black smoke increasing as the rpm increases, its not oil but reminds me or raw fuel. when i took it to my dealer this jack *** who was just a little too clean to know what the hell was going on was like oh that clunk is the chains in the transfercase because its primitive and he has a 2001 and it does the same thing , and when i showed him the smoke he said it was cause i was running 89 instead of 87... 3 tanks later it still does it ... i love my ranger please help

I'd say take it to a different dealership. Just because somebody else's truck does that, it shouldn't be dismissed. I think about the most likely way it would smoke like that is if an O2s is disconnected, or defective.

BlackXLT03,When you get a chance,go to the Areostar link and scroll down to "4.0 Stalling" to see what I went through to resolve my black smoke problem. Hopefully something there will help with yours.
