Truck 2005 6.0PSD 4X4. The steering wheel and the whole dang truck will have a side to side oscillation starting at 35 ish and at 70 you are really feeling it. I have new springs and rear spring bushings on it (wish I would have done that when I bought the truck 6 years ago!) Springs are W code on the front, and F code on the rear. It rides and controls sooooo much better!
I lifted only the front drive side wheel off the ground and had one of my sons twist that wheel left and right and traced the movement back to the output shaft of the steering box. I think the ball joints and pitman arm are tight. I am thinking that "tightening" the steering box will not fix this, as when driving, on center is numb but not bad. I realize this is no where near a sports / race car for steering feel. Is there a repair that I can do to the box, or is it a 'new' box?
Tightening the box is about a 5 minute deal (though you should take it in small increments and test drive each adjustment), so I ended up with an hour in the process. It's free, easy, and you can always go back to where you were (keeping track of each 1/16th or 1/4 turn adjustment).
Made a big difference on 2 of my vehicles, but didn't cure all the issues.
