Hi I've got a 1983 F150 300 6 cylinder running on only 4 cylinders. Happens to be the first 2 cylinders, 1 & 2 not working. I tried swapping spark plugs (known good ones, and swapped out spark plug wires & cap & rotor.) I'm wondering what it might be, what to, and where to go from here. Thanks for any ideas & help.
Thanks Maytag and 1986. Will do a compression test soon. As far as head gasket blown 1986, I'm not getting any steam or water in the oil which I thought would be the case with a blown head gasket. Thanks.
Okay, just did a compression test on all 6 cylinders, from front to back compression was:
1. 97
2. 120
3. 130
4. 130
5. 130
6. 125
What should the compression be, taking into account it is an older vehicle?
Obviously 1st cylinder is way below the others, and number 2 is below the other 4. I just took the valve cover off. Nothing seems way out of wack, no nuts are off the rockers or anything. What does this suggest is wrong and wondering what to do from here. Thinking next step would be to remove the head. How can I tell the difference between bad valves, blown head gasket and bad rings in piston? Thanks.
