Correct pinion Depth Setting.
Does anyone know the correct pinion depth? This is on a 78 Ford F250 4x4 with a Dana 60 axle. This is the front, i got it with no
gears in it so i dont know what the previous setting was. According to my depth gauge the proper way is to measure the Pinion Head Thickness and to subtract from 5.000 Mhd (Dana 60). They describe the Pht as the dimension from the top of the pinion gear to the thrust bearing mounting surface. What exactly are they talking about, do they want the Dimension of the pinion shaft down by the gear part. This is my first time setting up a diff so any help would be appreciated. Also the reading i came up for the depth is 3.396 inches. Not sure if its correct or not. Thanks

Correct pinion Depth Setting.
There isn't one depth...there is a most common but they fall within a range. Like the 8.8 normally uses a 30 thousand size shim, but can range from 27 to 32 ish. It depends on your axle housing. I highly suggest you take it to an axle shop since your going blind. Your going to run into the same problem with backlash and preload.
