I recently purchased an 02 F250 v10 4x4 with 150k from a local auto auction. The transmission, for lack of a better term, will "grunt" when going into third and in and out of overdrive. It doesn't seem to slip at all and the fluid looks slightly discolored, but it does not smell burnt. No Torque Converter whine either. A friend of mine who has owned 10+ SDs for his business said I may need to replace the TCM. Not too sure about that, because other than the strange noise, the truck seems to shift normally. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this problem.
I think I'm going to drop the pan and replace the filter, even though Ford doesn't suggest a filter change interval. Perhaps that and some clean ATF will make it happy.
Update: I dropped the pan and changed the filter and the fluid (obviously). The noise is gone and the truck shifts great. I learned a lesson in the process, however. Despite what was stamped on the pan, the gasket is not reusable. And the wadded up paper thin gasket that comes with the filter kit from Autozone is useless (throw it away, don't even try it). Spend the $25 and buy the Felpro gasket in addition to the filter. This is not something you want to do twice, or three times in my case. Oh well, I guess the tranny got a good flushing in the process.
Roofman,
My 02 F250 5.4 always had a quick torque convertor "shudder" when shifting into OD, it was like 1/2 second. I was told it was a know problem and had 3 options. 1) don't worry about it, 2) change fluid with additive and don't worry about it, new torque convertor.
I had a fluid change with some Ford additive and it went away about 1000 mikes later.
