From what I was told there is only a external filter ...no internal filter. When I had the transmission serviced at 30k ...the external filter needed to be replaced motorcraft P/N 7C3Z-7B155-B they will only drop the transmission pan durning the service to clean the pan and reuse the pan gasket. It requires SYTH/Transmission fluid.....

Only one filter on my ticket. However, there was also a screen assembly, a gasket and a latch.

You do need to take these units to someone who can perfrom a transmission flush. I do not believe the average owner is equipped to service these properly on his/her own.

The correct fluid is Mercon SP only. Do Not use any other fluid no matter what anyone tells you. The internal screen stops trees and boulders and is serviced only during rebuilds or if the pan is off for any other reason.

I agree this is the best option but can the average backyard mechanic still perform a drain and fill with a filter swap? Would this empty everything except the converter?

Ext. filter holds approx. 8 ounces, the pan when drained holds between 7 and 8 qts. The rest is in the converter.

Got a friend that used to work at the transmission plant (2 years ago) and he tells me there should be a drain plug on the converter. Anyone have any idea if thats actually true? Since he hasnt worked there for 2 years maybe they changed things and the 08+ converters dont have one??

I have read on these threads the the converters no longer have the drain plug and that goes for all the torqueshifts.

This is an older thread but what exactly does the external filter do? 157 bucks for something that looks like it does nothing. Two lines in and two lines out. Ford used to have a toilet paper filter that actually filtered stuff. This new design just does not make sense.
