What to look for when buying a 2000 F-250 7.3 Powerstroke
This weekend I'm going to look at a 2000 F-250 7.3 Powerstroke 4x4 XLT. It has 228k miles on it and the truck and engine are bone stock. The seller told me that the batteries and starter have just been replaced. Also, there is no rust on the oil pan which does not leak. Is there anything in specific I should look at on the engine and truck to determine if the truck is worn out or not? Also, what should I look for when test driving the truck? Please offer me any advice. This is my first time purchasing a diesel Ford pickup.
For the truck itself look hard underneath for rust. Even if the outside looks good. Mines rusted on the bed supports and under the cab sides. Ask about balljoints and other steering gear replacement. They are heavy and wear out front end parts.
For the motors i just helped a friend change glowplugs, gaskets and glow relay. Ask if/when those were ever done. Good luck!
Look for the usual stuff you'd see on any vehicle. See how it starts and runs cold, drive it until it's completely warm. Look for excessive smoke. At the up-pipes behind the turbo look for soot, that's a sign of a leaking exhaust and will have to be replaced. With the engine idling, remove the oil cap and just set it on top of the oil fill tube. If the blowby is strong enough to push the oil cap off, then you have compression issues. Pay attention to how the transmission shifts and how the torque converter locks and unlocks. Any slippage and you're due for tranny issues soon. Check for oil in the engine valley.
Check fluid conditions and how it starts cold. Listen and feel for engine misses.
Should be a great truck if in good shape. I drive a 2002 7.3 for work with 296K on the original engine and transmission. I tow 10k pounds with it almost daily. Burns no oil and never quits. Mods on it are exhaust, cai and an edge cs which I never take off the performance tune.
