Need HELP-How should I fix the steering column

1974 F250 4x4 Manual Steering & Manual Trans.

The PO told me that he replaced the entire steering column because he couldn't fix the turn signals. I do not know what year steering column he replaced it with.

My problem is that the steering shaft moves from side to side at the White Plastic Bushing area. It's located just before it bolts onto the Shaft/Rod that bolts to the steering box. I've tried to put the White plastic bushing in and it keeps popping out. I'm thinking that there's no other bushing or bearing behind the white plastic bushing. Also it looks like the PO had the shaft going to the steering box sectioned and welded????

The PO left the original steering column in the truck. That column center shaft moves up and down ( look at the pictures to see how much it moves). I do see a sealed bearing at the bottom of it.

Could I fix the old column if I replace the turn signal guts?
Is there something wrong with the old column if the shaft moves up and down?

Is there suppose to be another bushing behind the white one?

What should I do????

Original Column, note how much the shaft pulls out.

Opposite end of above pic, I pulled the shaft out at the bottom. The steering wheel nut stops it from pulling through.

Picture of the original shaft

Column put in by the PO. Note shaft has been section and welded.

Showing how shaft moves from side to side.

I can help with your white plastic piece dilemma. Bronco graveyard sells a metal bushing with a bearing to replace that piece. The plastic is not reproduced anywhere that I know of. I made my own when I rebuilt the steering column in my 1978 Bronco.

Get the metal bearing replacement as noted above from Bronco Grave yard. I did and it's a well made part.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the white plastic bushing the only thing centering the shaft or was there suppose to be another bushing behind it?

Will just using the bushing from Bronco graveyard all I'll have to do or is there another bushing behind that?

There's nothing wrong with the upper bearing. I did look up the telescopic steering shaft, are you referring to the lower one? If so that is pricey. What do I have to replace what I have?

The steering column that is in the truck, does anyone know about what year it is.

I don't think the white bearing cap was available in 1974

I would replace the lower shaft because your life depends on the integrity of whomever welded that thing up.

If that's the case, should I just rebuild the original column and use the original lower shaft as seen in the above picture.

Needing step by step pictures or a video showing how to rebuild the steering column and its blinker system

You can not go wrong rebuilding the original column..Some of the guys here have great exploded illustrations of your column.. Surely NumberDummy or someone will chime in..

It appears DC has this part.

Your homemade setup is slick. The BGY shows his bearing fits '76-'79, so I don't know if that would fit in my '74 column??

Johnny - Did you get your column rebuilt?I’m sorta in the same situation with my ’74.There seems to be “bits and pieces” on the lower end of my column and at this point I can’t really tell what parts really match-up in the schematic.

Mine didn’t have the white bushing, or even a bearing at the bottom. The lower part of my steering shaft was flopping around in the column, so I guess I'm going to buy all the parts shown in the schematic to see how it will go together. I'll post up when I figure something out...

Markintexas-The parts totaled together came close to a Borgensen complete shaft, so I bought a Borgensen one from Bronco Garveyard
