Just received a 1974 F250 HB w/ manual steering. The end of the steering shaft that is in the engine compartment side has a white plastic sleeve hanging from it. I can take the shaft on that end and move it up and down.
Does the plastic sleeve hold it in place or is there something else that is causing the slop.
That white plastic piece should also have a bearing in it that goes around the steering column shaft. There should be tabs on the white collar that snap into the housing. They may be broke or weak.
Yes that should work if the plastic side clips on the side are broke off. I think there is a bearing up in there too? Here are some more diagrams for you....
I had a hard time getting the white plastic sleeve back on but as soon as it was on it fell off. Are these replaceable. Do I need to pull the column or steering sector rod.
Tabs that hold it in are either worn or broke. Can be replaced and you may have to back off column to separate from shaft. I think bronco graveyard sells a metal replacement for it.
Yes were right, I was too much in a hurry to take it around the block for the first time. I think the center bushing is missing so I believe I'll end up buying a new one. It looks like an easy fix and cheap price on the part.
