Recently my steering shaft has become very loose, to the point it felt like I could just lift my steering wheel off.
I took it to my mechanic and he replaced the upper shaft bearings sleeves and so on. It is still loose and he says it would be $270.00 for him to replace the lower bearing and sleaves.
Is this a common problem on 1993 F250 with tilt steering? I have looked in my automotive guide and they do not go into any detail about how to dig into the column, but I would like to do this myself.
I had the same problem with my 88 F150. I took it to a mechanic who replaced all the Bearings and bushings except for the shaft. The wheel is about 85% better. He was unable to get a new shaft because Ford does not manufacture them any longer. I spent $260 for this and was not satisfied. I did some researching and found that you can buy a re-built steering column on line for about $350-$600 which is too much. I went to a few local junk yards to find one but they are hot items. One yard put it on the Intercom that connects about 60 yards in the Philadelphia, New Jersey area and there was a lot of laughing about a tilt steering colum for a Ford.
This may not be much help to you except that you can look on line for a good completely rebuilt column.
