I've got a mild 390 in an old highboy farm truck that I've been driving more often for the past couple weeks. When I built the engine, I had headers and true duals with glasspacks run all the way out back. After looking through a glasspack I deduced that they are way to restrictive - and the internet backed up my deductions.
Since I couldn't have any power-robbing restrictions, I promptly cut off the packs and installed super high flowing straight pipe. At idle and on normal acceleration, they sound great. If I hammer on it, they don't sound the best. Upon slowing down, they sound loud and obnoxious.
I want an actual muffler that doesn't restrict flow but gives me a nice deep rumble and can talk a bit if I hammer on it.
Suggestions?
Also, since I hate spending money on anything that doesn't give me more power or economy, I would like to stay under $150 for two.
I'm running Flow Master 50 series and they sound really nice. I have 2 1/2" duals with a cross over running out to the bumpers. I'f you cut the exhaust off before the rear end it will get obnoxious.
I second summit racings mufflers! I bought two of their street and strip mufflers in the 3" flavor. They sound great and seem to be of high quality construction. Fully welded and heavy gauge steel. There is just one V shaped baffle as far as restriction is concerned. Oh and unlike some mufflers that are painted(glasspacks), the coating has yet to wear or burn off. They run $60 a pair, so its well under your price point.
If you want absolute flow find a perforated glasspack. The louvers in some glass packs is what constricts exhaust flow. Dynomax race bullets, summit racing, and some thrush glasspacks are made like this.

If a glasspack is too restrictive for you then do not get anything that remotely resembles a dronemaster/flowdisaster.
You're going to need to look for something like dynomax ultraflos they are a perforated pipe, not louvered, muffler that you can look through.
What do you all think about Magnaflow mufflers? To me they just look like a perforated glasspack with stainless-steel wool instead of glass. Would they be any quieter than a new glasspack?
Look at the Dynomax Ultra Flo. Straight through and made well. Had one on my 04' but needed a large capacity chambered muffler (so it sounds good) when I put my headers on. My dad had a Magnoflow on his truck with the sam eengine and IMO the Ultra Flo sounded better.
Dynomax has Ultra Flos with a 20" and 24" long case. The extra case length will help cut down the sound output and harsh noises.
Glasspacks sound great on these old trucks and they're appropriate for the era. Use a longer case to reduce the noise. They're cheap, and if it's still too loud, put in an extra (short) glasspack.
I just put dual 28in Thrush Glass Packs on my '77 460. Its not as loud as I thought it would be. What do you mean too restrictive? I can see right through it!
I got a heartthrob exhaust kit on my 79 with Cherry-bomb Vortex Mufflers. Those definitely don't restrict airflow, and they aren't as loud as the glasspacks. I'll post a vid today if it isn't raining once I get home.
