was looking at buying a 1984 f-150 4x4. it has 300 cid 6 with 4 speed manual tranny. there is some rust on the roof and fenders. looked at it today and didn't notice any leaks but it was very wet looking at the front of the motor by the pulley. the wet mark went back along the bottom of the oil pan. the truck started right up and i didn't see any smoke coming out of the exhaust. guy is asking $1500. interior is immaculate. does this sound like a good buy?
Offer him about 1100 cash or so. You don't know what the wet mark is? Let it run a while and check all the fluids. If he wants the full 1500 but can't tel you whats wrong get him to have it checked out and if he refuses walk. and walk fast. Its an 84 F-150 there'll be plenty more trust me. I looked at 15 83-86's beoreI got my 85 with a rough body and perfect running gear with a fair interor (headliner sagging and some scuffs) for 900 bucks. Don't let yourself get suckered into somthng you don't want no matter how much you pay it's gonna be a lot of money.
Also i this truck a daily driver or a project fixer-upper/weekend s**t truck? If its the second one look for a truck in a 1000range. Hope I helped
First question? How many miles, those 300's are good up to and over 200,000, but that leak worrys me, I'd make him tell you whats wrong. By the way that leak? Are we talking bout oil or water, check the frost plugs. With a leak, half rusted, and good interior, I'd offer him a 1000 and go from there. If it's an everyday truck make sure it's in good shape, play around or project offer a 1000.
Well here in Nebraska we get the worst of both worlds. 110 in the summer and all the way to 5 below sometimes in the winter. So my truck gets a work out, by the way it's a 86 Ford F-150 4x4 with a 300 to with 200K plus, plus it doesn't take a drop of oil. All I've put into my engine is timing gears, motor mount, and carb kit plus straight exhaust just b/c I can. Has lots of torque, pulled a big stock trailer full of 1200 pound cattle for 14 years before I got it. Clutch is still amazilly good and so is rear end and 4-spd manual tranny. Went through 3 of those stupid lifetime warrenty rebuilt starters though.
Yeah I've been looking for a 79 F-250 with a 390 myself. Hard to find in good condition and when you do they are a pretty penny. There's about a 76 F-250 factory highboy 4x4 with a 390, factory posi's front and back, 4 speed, rusty fenderwells, snowblade, decent all terrian tires, orangish red and it's kind of rough inside but not to bad. The guy wants like 3000 something for it. Tempting, but I don't think so.
Oh I got ya, what do you got for a lift on that thing and also what do you think of the price of the truck above. Also to the original message, I was thinking maybe the water pumps just not tightened up or a loose raditor hose or something.
Stock 4" Highboy lift, 36" Super Swampers, and 3" body lift (bumper too), I personally wouldn't pay more than $1200.00, but then again trucks are everywhere down here, most likely, but it could be a bad head gasket.
I picked up my 77 High Boy for 500 bucks. It has: very strong running 351M, good clutch, 4 spd grannybox shifts nice and solid, 4wd works great, Dana 60s posi in both with 4.10 gears, the interior is very beat, and a lot of rust on the body, but the chassis and running gear are solid.
3000 is alot to pay for a truck in that condition and of that age, I would look a little harder. Believe it or not those trucks are out there you just have to keep your eyes open. I almost gave up hope and look what happened!
Yeah I could care less about the engine and interior. I'm just looking for a good 73 to 79 with a good body(no rust or dents.) I'd probably build up the engine anyway so it would have to come out.
