My 1984 f-150 4x4 has a roaring noise. It sounds like it is coming from the front end. At 45 mph it is like you turn on a switch it sounds very bad. Below 45 you can barely hear it but 45 is the magical number. If you turn the wheel from left to right while go 45 and above you can hear a difference in the pitch of the roar. Can this be a wheel bearing or maybe a body vibration. I jacked the truck up and checked for play in the wheels but didn't detect any. Need your suggestions.
Thanks JJH
If it's been awhile since you have re-packed the front wheel bearings, go ahead and do that and maybe you will come across the problem. I don't know if you've had it apart before, but you will need a special socket you can get at the parts store for about $20.00 and at the least, two front wheel bearing seals.
Yea it has been a while since the bearings were repacked and the ones on the passenger side were replaced so I'm thinking start on the driver side with new ones that I already have and then take it for a test drive. If that dosen't work we'll go for the other side. I do have the socket and a Haynes manual but haven't attempted it solo yet. Have got to get me one of those bearing packers to. Guess thats better than the ole hands. Thanks
I need to do this on my 85 F150 4x4. What kinda socket is it? I've got the Haynes manual but it's out in the garage. Just curious as to what else I need to do this.
Thanks,
Ron
I can't discribe it. It is something that won't fit anything but the large nut inside of the front hubs. You ain't gonna get them off without one. Mine came from the ford place but sure you can get one at most parts houses. It is a big socket with notches around the outer edge and it is half inch drive.
I'd rather pay a few extra bucks at NAPA and talk to guys who know what the heck they're talking about than the young kids at Kragen who know nothing. If I know exactly what I need, Kragen, Pep Boys, Auto Zone is good, but if you are trying to track down an abscure part or tool, NAPA is good (at least my local store is).
I got the bearings replaced today and NO MORE ROARING!! I just went ahead and replaced both sides with new bearings. While the rotors were of I had them trued up and put on new pads. I think I am good to go on the front now.
