Time for Tires, replace TPMS sensors too?

All,

Got 62K on my OEM Michelin LTX-AT2 tires. Very happy with the wear. Going to get them replaced in the next month with the same thing.

Question is, what is the expected life on the TPMS sensor/batteries in the wheels? Should I be replacing those at the same time? I put about 20K miles on per year, so tires last around 3 years. If TPMS is some multiple of 3, then I am ok, otherwise I will replace them when it goes in for new tires.

Anyone have any real world experience on battery life?

Thanks, Dave

I've never replaced TPMS sensors. My Dodge Magnum is 8yrs old and the summer and winter wheels both have the original sensors, Tires have been changed a few times. Never changed them in the 04 Vette either and that was 9 yrs old when I sold it.

It doesn't seem to be a very important maintenance item. I've never heard anybody state a recommended service interval on them. I always figured they were pretty much a use them til they fail item.

Yea, I tend to agree. For me the issue is that I don't want to go back to the tire store to get them replaced a year into new tires. other websites seem to say 5-7 years, so I will probably not replace this time, but thats why I am asking.

I should be at 5.5 years on my next tire change. It will probably be worth replacing them, but I wouldn't worry about them at 4 years or less.

Just do the valve stems - "TPMS Service Kit" is about the only PM you have to do which is convenient to do when getting tires changed.

Is that something the tire store would have, or do i need to source them myself? I guess I don't know how common this stuff is. Never owned a vehicle with TPMS before. I found them on e-bay $10-15 USD for a set of 4. But I can buy 4 complete sensors with the valve stems for $50.

Call ahead to your tire store. They most likely have them.

Americas Tires here installs the kits for 5 bucks per wheel, parts and labor. Not worth it to me not to have it done.
