Since moving to Arizona, I noticed the effects of ozone and sunlight on rubber to be dramatically higher than exposure in the East. I have kept my truck in a garage for all its life but I don’t exercise the truck enough to keep the tires supple. I use Aerospace Protectant 303 which I found to be a superior rubber protectant.
I have the old style 15” wheels that have tires with large sidewalls. I haven’t noticed any cracking but the rubber will brown if I don’t maintain a regimen of cleaning and adding protectant. The tires have less than 1200 miles and the tread is like new.
This now brings up the question of tire replacement due to age. I know the tire manufacturers have an age stamp but I don’t know of any universal rule that tires must be placed solely on age. My tires are currently 24 years old and “look” new. However, I have only a 9-mile radius for cruising.
I’d like to know how the FTE guys here handle this issue.
Our precious lawmakers in DC are contemplating making it a law that tires be replaced after 8 or 9 yrs. I've heard some tire shops won't mount or repair tires older than that for liability reasons.
My tires are 7 yrs old, have 14k miles on them, and look new, easily 80% of tread left. I don't know what I'll do. I'm surprised you have such an issue with ozone, there is just as much sun and ozone here as in Prescott and I haven't noticed any oxidation on any of my vehicles.
24 yr. old tires ? You are playing with fire .
My brother has 27 yr. old tires on his awesome chopped 33 ford .I asked about tire age 27 yrs old .Said you need new tires . He doesn't drive it at all maybe 2x a yr. The tries have aged out .
Friend of mine took Blil Tower ( see Bill Towers Rarest Corvettes on you tube ) took Chuck Yeager on a ride around Daytona in the SR11 Corvette ( 1 of 2 ) on 30 yr. old tires . Bill said " What was I thinking ,I could have killed both of us" .
Old tires are an accident waiting to happen .
Had 40 yr. old tires on "Art" the hot rod truck for 1 trip to a car show. Hard as Superman's Knee Caps They are gone replaced w/ BF Goodrich radials . Night & day difference .
The tires on this car were purchased in the summer of 1976. Still look new! Never goes above 40mph and my cruise trips are about 4 miles. If I drove it more I'd put new rubber on it. But I don't. I just like to drive it to the center of town and back, slowly, and enjoy the ride
I'm assuming that these are tubeless tires? Heat is the enemy. If your 9 miles is not at highway speeds your chances are better that you won't have a problem. But watch the sidewall for bubbles or a tire that is losing air without a puncture. Watch your tire pressures. Of course replacing them would give you some peace of mind.
