I don't think it's for power, it's just to reduce the amount of fuel that boils out when you stop. Then you don't have to crank as much to re-start. I've used 3 regular gaskets on a Holley 94 (stock carb), it helps. But mostly because the stock flathead intake manifolds have an exhaust heat riser under the carb.
I'm tearing down everything under the hood to detail and paint. Im replacing the Edelbrock RPM intake with a Edelbrock RPM endurashine on the 302. The intake on the truck had a 3/8 thick gasket under the carb. I've run several Edelbrock carbs before and never run a thick gasket and never noticed and issue with heat soak to the carb. I'm thinking I'll just use 2 of the regular thin gaskets.
