Sucking air into fuel line

Hey Everyone,
I have a '99.5 f350 7.3 and its pulling air at about 1/8th - 1/4 tank. I believe the pick up must have a crack in it. Its been awhile since I've been on here and I know there is a fix but, I can't seem to find it. Can someone help me out with this problem?
I'll be going from Fl. to Iowa on a hunting trip soon and need to fix my fuel issue before I go.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

You are probably thinking of the hutch mod, you likely have a cracked pickup foot so you would need that too, unless you wanted to do a sump setup instead of the lift style.

Thanks BigAlspsd,
I think that is what I'm looking for! I see there's links there for a kit too. I don't want to fabricate stuff, I would like to get the kit or get parts needed and fix it now. Thanks again and I'll get back if I have more questions.

After looking at what is available, I think all I should need is the pick up foot. Any thoughts?

The pickup foot was the only part of the hutch mod that wasnt already laying around the shop when i did mine...

Dieselorings.com hooked me right up.

i'm thinking that it is only pulling air when the tank is low. It started the first time at about 1/8th of a tank so I would fuel up at 1/4 tank. But, one day it started to buck at 1/4 tank so i try not to let it get too far below 1/2 tank now. I have to say, it feels better at the gas station when i fill from there, I feel like I'm not spending as much! I just have to do it twice as much. I digress.
I wonder if the foot has fallen off?

if your gonna drop the tank to fix the pickup foot i'd definitely recommend going with a kit to do the hutch/harpoon mods at the same time. I used the kit from strictly diesel and I really liked it. it came with a pre pump fuel filter/water separator as well. Just make sure your tank is empty before you try to drop it.

Thanks Jason,
I was just talking with a buddy and he said the same thing "while you're in there you might as well...." It hit me then to not to try to go the cheep route. Question, I can't run the fuel below 1/4 tank, how do you get the rest out? I will have to leave about 3/8 in it so it doesn't suck air and I'm not sure if I can get a siphon hose in there. I have to admit I haven't tried yet.

I just put a piece of fuel line over the fuel bowl drain opened the valve and cycled the key a bunch. Obviously put it into a gas can of some sort. The pump cycles on for 20 secs per cycle.

As long as it's mostly empty you should be able to drop it safely. The siphon hose would prolly work too.

I used 1/2" water tubing from the hardware store. It siphons easy-peazy and makes you queasy.

Queasy, Yeah, as a kid I was siphoning some gas and ended up swallowing some. When I burped, you could see the fumes! It was awful!
