Hi all, I'm new here and this seems like a pretty cool site. Seems there is everything on here. Anyway just got a new fuel pump put in my 99 3.0 Ranger and now after it's warmed up from a few miles it starts to choke and almost die. No CEL comes on and I just put new Motorcraft plugs in and still the same thing. I read something about maybe cleaning EGR....? Is there anyone who can help this poor ******* out...??
Why did you replace the pump?(I'm guessing that it was dead).
Have you told the shop about your problem?
Usually checking the fuel pressure is a good idea. Basically there's a Schrader valve that looks like a tire valve. You hook the gauge to that. You want to check it by just turning the ignition on, with the truck running, and after it's been stopped a few minutes. Lots of guys around here can tell yhou if the numbers are good or bad.
Possibly your fuel filter is clogged. You need a special tool to change them, but a lot of guys do it. Search on fuel filter and you'll probably find a few how tos.
Another frequent problem on these trucks is the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off and check for the smell of gas. What can happen is that the diaphragm leaks and it causes problems.
Thanks you guys, really, but now all of a sudden I have bigger issues. I started it up last night and there it was; the dreaded clouds of white smoke! It was that undeniable smoke... I had it years ago when I had the 94 Ranger. Well it's got 200k on it. When it rains it pours, but I'm gonna do it again....change the gasket! You're my friends now so I'll take you along....Please feel free to chime in at any time. Your thoughts and comments are always greatly appreciated and respected...
While I am not sure the two issues (poor performance and white smoke) are related, they could be. A couple of suggestions:
1. Take the truck back to the shop that installed the new fuel pump and ask them to check things out. Be sure to ask about the brand of pump they put in and post that info. Also ask them if they checked fuel pressure after the installation.
2. Pull 2 or 3 spark plugs to check to see if they are wet. If so, you may be getting water into the cylinders.
When you said you were going to replace a gasket, which gasket were you going to replace? Before doing that, do some diagnostic work. Is the engine coolant level falling, indicating a possible blown head gasket? Determine which bank of cylinders that have the leak, if that is the problem. Just throwing parts at the problem before determining exactly what the problem is can be a waste of time and money.
Hey guys, Tomorrow I'm telling the shop that put in new fuel pump and I believe they did the fuel filter also. So far all I've done to it are plugs and thermostat. Started it up today and there really wasn't a whole lot of smoke, not like the other night, and it idled pretty well but you could what seemed to be a little ball hopping around inside the top of the motor. Best way to describe it. After a few minutes of running it then began to run rough, so I shut it down. I did notice a very little smoke coming from the back of motor near the firewall. Couldn't tell exactly where but... And yes I am losing coolant somewhere.
Well, yesterday i drove it down to Ford ( 1 mile away) and when I got there I parked on the street and went in. When I came out I noticed what seemed to be butterscotch pudding just oozing from underneath motor. Front seal. I mean it was coming out! With water mixed in. Had it towed home and now I'm taking it apart....
Lol. Sorry 66, I guess I'm not too specific. The front part of the oil pan. It's like the rubber gasket was just kind of pushed out. My oil has the consistancy of maple syrup. Excuse spelling. I'm changing the head gasket.I'm not sure if I'm able to post pictures on here but I'll see if I can...
Well here it is, I've changed the head gasket cleaned everything and now am waiting for pan gasket to come in. I snapped a bolt on the rocker arm and Ford said they wanted $23 for one...Lol. Junkyard tomorrow...
