Gonna go ahead and do my next oil change (3rd one on new-to me-motor), did first one at 100miles (flushing any excess junk out), second one at 250, and 3rd one at 1k, filtered the first 2 (plan to do the 3rd as well) and didn't have anything bad in it (first one had some gunk, to be expected on a motor that sat for quite some time), 2nd was clean as a whistle and I expect the same from the 3rd. Ive been using Rotella 15-40, but im gonna make the big switch to T6.
Id like to go to a 5-40 T6 if I can find some around here, any other suggestions? Im going a little lighter on the cold side in hopes to help it start a little easier while cold with these new 160/100 sticks. Plan to go to a 5-7k interval to balance the cost but from what ive read the above oil has done wonders for the vast majority. Ill let you guys know how I like it once I get it done this weekend. (Also gonna detail that nasty engine that was so shiny prior to install and diagnosing all my issues!).
(excuse me if im brain farting but 5-40 is the correct one right?)
If you have O'Reilly Auto Parts in your neck of the woods, they are having a sale this month on the T6 5w-40 for $20 a gallon (that's $8 off normal pricing). I bought 5 quarts, will probably go pick up 3 or 4 more.

I suggest getting a bypass filter if you plan to go beyond 5000 miles on an oil change. I have to change oil 4 times per year with T6 and the oil looks pretty black at 5000. Woodnthings gets 10,000 and his oil looks good.
I'm planning on making the switch over to T-6 as well.... I was told by some buddies here on FTE that when I make the change. I should take the cap off top of my HPOP and suck out the old oil and replace it with the T-6. That way you don't cross contaminate oils.
Tugly do you know what bypass filter woodnthings is using? I was thinking on doing a bypass as well. Just not sure which one to go with.
I keep hearing all this stuff about removing the oil from the HPOP resivior and adding fresh oil........doesn't oil naturally circulate through the HPOP enough to keep the oil in there pretty fresh? seems like alot of bother to do this at each oil change....how much oil does the HPOP hold anyway?
I like the ideal of a large magnet on the oil filter though!!
I think changing oil in the HPOP is more for when you're switching oils, and don't want the old oil to mix with the new oil.
I've also heard that there is now a 0-40 T6 out. And Walmart carries T6 for $21 a gallon online, and in stores can match the online price. I had been using regular rotella because of the big price difference, but since I learned about the Walmart trick, I'll be taking advantage of it.

Supercab - the only time I sucked out my HPOP reservoir was when I went from regular dinosaur oil to Rotella T6. I won't do it again, since I'm sticking with T6 5w-40 from here forward. I got quite a bit (I felt) out of the HPOP reservoir.
it will take at least one oil change to get most of the residual oil from the rest of the engine.I have run gm & ford diesels 7500 miles on quality synthetic oil w/o bypass filter and great sample reports & 10k on altima, accor, geo metro as well.but I will eventually get the bypass filter.like the extra protection.
Off topic, but changing the hpop oil doesnt sound like a bad idea anymore. Reason i say this, is, me and buddy did an oil change on his truck last week. Somehow, he "overfilled" by a quart or so. SO, without having a fumoto and possibly losing more than what we need to evacuate, we decided to pull from the reservoir. Mind you, the truck was run'n for ATLEAST 10min, b4 checking oil level. Removed the plug, got out a turkey bastor and drained the reservoir...The oil that came from there was PURE BLACK, where on the dipstick, was golden brown, again, 10min of run'n.
I'm not say'n it doesnt "circulate" into the pan, but i think it does it at a VERY SLOW PACE...
