You asked with no relationship to what!
Rock crawling?
Mud and snow?
It make little difference unless your considering heavey loads, then torque rules..
Good luck.

Power/torque in a truck is related to speed and gears. If it has a high gear ration axle, means high torque for pulling loads. It will perform well in off road/slow situations. Just a let down at 70 MPH at interstate speeds/conditions. Not doing well to get above 50 MPH was our grandfathers time, a different time and strategy. Trade off is less gas used at idle around the grounds day to day. On the road the trade off is negligible and power disappointing if compaired with a 5.4. But at the gas pump a bigger smile.

A 4.2 V6, and the weight of 4WD, and the weight of a trailer to tow... You'd be at the bottom of the power spectrum of trucking. No wait, have a 3.08 axle ratio in it, that would even be better! (worse yet)

A lot of cities bought fleet XL's with the 4.2 V6 for lowest cost. I don't see them use them for anything but two guys in them, and some tools or a blob of sewage slop in the back. No trailer towing, not even a lighter duty landscape-type trailer.

My $.02

My dad used my brothers 4.2L 2WD and the power was just fine. Pulling grades with a ton of scrap in the bed, it did just fine. Sure its not going to win any races, but it has adequate power for most situations. Obviously you need to size the truck for what you will be doing most of the time.

I agree, with my lumber rack on my 2wd 4.2, I carried a heavy load
(1800 lbs of steel stock).

I also carry at least 700 lbs of lumber at least once a month.

The truck never complains even with 160,000 miles.

This is the best work horse truck I have owned so far.

Gearing with the 4.2 does make a difference, if the truck suits you

buy it.
