03 Chev Malibu. Full of fuel, but gauge reads empty (it works) fuel pump runs to pressure when key is turned on, car starts and runs about 5 secomds then dies, with key still on pump comes on again and car will start again and run about 5 seconds then die again. Car was driven yesterday with no problems. Just started this today. Fuses seem fine. Cannot locate emergency fuel pump shut off - if it has one. Pump was changed about 2 years ago, which means absolutely nothing other than it is pumping enough to get it started. It runs just fine once it has started with ether sprayed into the intake. Anybody got any ideas?
do you have a security light on/flashing either while in run or running? If the PCM doesn't get a valid fuel enable signal it will start then cut the fuel off like you stated, which is a theft deterrent feature. This could be a problem with the igntion switch, BCM, PCM or wires. If you have access to a scan tool a DTC might be set in the PCM for fuel enable signal invalid.
About a month ago I had turd of a Grand Am (N body same as Malibu) with the same problem after a guy did an engine swap. I found a rodent nest in the HVAC blower and near that was the BCM it had used for it's toilet. The BCM had to be replaced along with most of the wires going to it, but after that it fired right up ran and smoked and knocked real bad. The engine he put in was junk, but I drove it out of the shop.
About the fuel gauge... I think it is a seperated issue, prolly just a bad sensor, or wiring issue.
