2008 vs 2012

As you an see from my signature I own a 08 F350 which has 4:10 gears. After this last trip to AZ pulling 5th wheel and only getting 7 - 8.5 mpg driving 65 most of the trip, I'm seriously considering a new F350. Has anyone switched from 2008 to 2012 with about the same truck? I'm thinking of going back to 3:73 which I know helps a bit. But if someone did switch what was your mileage difference. I have been also tossing idea of replacing my 4:10 with 3:73 to improve mileage. My 08 only has 24k on the clock. Thanks.

There is an efficiency gain going from the 6.4L to the 6.7L engine, but it's hard to put an exact number on it. My '08 had 3.73 gears and would get around 15 on the highway unloaded, and my '11 had 3.55 gears and could do 19-20 on the highway depending on conditions. I didn't notice a huge difference towing, but I didn't put that many miles on with a trailer either.

What kind of a trailer do you pull? You'd see the best gains if you went with a SRW truck. Even with 3.31 gears it's rated to tow nearly 16,000 lbs.

Can't speak for mileage with a 6.4, but can tell you with the 6.7.
I have a '12 F-350 CC DRW 4x4 3.73 stock tire size 245*75*17 General Grabber HT. 6500 miles 6 months old

Unloaded (no trlr) HWY:
HWY MPG 1700 RPM (just over 70mph) 20.*+-mpg calculated
HWY MPG 2000 RPM (just over 75 mph) 19.* +- mg calculated

Loaded (12,500 lb enclosed hauler) (non 5th wheel)
HWY MPG 1700 RPM (just over 70mph) 15.*+-mpg calculated
HWY MPG 2000 RPM (just over 75 mph) 14.* +- mg calculated

skip the 3.73's or 4:11's you have 6 gears in the transmission! depending on what tire size you want to run I suggest 3:31's or at most 3:55's pretty much the standard ratios available. if this isn't enough umph going up a canyon I can always drop to 5th

Can you get 3:31's or 3:55's on an F-350?

I would be extremely hesitant to trade a truck in with nothing wrong other than the fuel mileage.
The amount of money you lose trading stuff can pay for a lot of fuel.
There are some things you can to to a 6.4 to get better mileage.

3.55 gears are the way to go 2011 +

I pull a 12k lb 5th wheel and at times a 4K lb boat tandem, hence the DRW and 4:10. I had an 05 F250 with 3:73 and would get 10-12 pulling just the 5'er. The reason for switching from the 05 to the 08 was because I wanted the stability of the DRW and the 05 shuttered a little when taking off, hence the 4:10 (plus it was the only white/grey DRW the dealer had).

I have a '11 f350 with 3.55 gears and i get 11 mpg around town. I also idle it quite a bit and take a lot of short trips. When I didnt I think I got as high as 15~16 mpg?
My truck only has 19k mi on it.

I have f350 3.31 cc, lb, srw, I get 17-18 driving as a daily, 20 on the open road. But towing I get like 12 which is better then my v10(8). I would love to get 15/14 towing my small 8 k small Travel Trailer.

I may be one of the few who post here that have a 4.10 LS rearend in my 2011. I use the truck for nothing other than towing a 34' Alumascape 5th wheel, however it is my only driver when in California. I get 18.5-20.5 mpg empty and 11.5-12.5 towing. I had a 2004 F250 SRW diesel before. This truck is better mileage empty or loaded than the 04. I do however drive slower than most of the guys who post here. I drive 58-60 mph empty or loaded. I'm retired and in no hurry, so don't drive very fast. We love the truck!!!!!!!!!!

I'd stick with what you have for awhile longer myself.

I second this motion.

The amount of money you lose on trading and such won't come close to the fuel you'd save going to the 6.7..... for a very long time.

Are you off warranty?
What about a tuner and DPF delete pipe?
Spartan has a tow tune that add I think 200 hP, and keeps good EGT's towing.

You havent put many miles on it, and unfortunately they ding you just cause of the age, I'd do some serious thinking before trading it.

sdrono,
I don't know of anyone who has gone from a 6.4 to a 6.7 that isn't completely happy. My 6.4 had 7000 miles on it when I traded is for my 6.7. I hated that pig. Unloaded, with #2 diesel the best highway mileage I could get is 16.7 with my 6.4. My 6.7 unloaded, #2, it's easy to hit 20 mpg. Untuned, it's a beast.
I recommend the 3.55.
Just take a test drive.....

Most 6.4 owners happiest days are the 1st day of ownership and the last day they are forced to unload it.

Good luck.... I highly recommend the 6.7 psd. It's powerful and fuel efficient and doesn't require cab off repairs for what should be a simple repair!

I also recommend the 6.7... but for a guy with what sounds like 24,000 un eventful miles on his truck , I think he'd kind of lose more than he'd gain in a trade.
