Today while on my way to work (a twice a week drive) a 4 hour trip my truck all of a sudden would not drive. its like i took the drive shaft out. i pulled off of the interstate immediately. i got out checked every thing, it all looked fine. i started the truck and tried reverse nothing happened along with 1,2, and drive. i thought well maybe the transfer case slipped outta gear, pushed up nothing happened again. so i put it in neutral and began to select 4x4 ran the same test and again nothing. i then selected 4x4 low in neutral and it moved in every gear. i put it back into 2wd and it moved but was still in low gear. i think this may be a transfer case problem but i am not positive what is your alls take on this.
My truck is a 1997 f-150 4.6 auto 4x4 184,000 mile approx a ford manufacturer rebuilt engine form 2004.
any help will greatly be appreciated!!

Reason: Stupid spelling
If the issue is still present does the OD lamp flash?
Have the codes looked at for any codes relating to the trransmission.
Remove the cable plug on the side of the trans and inspect for corrosion then reconnect it firmly and test for any change.
When the trans won't move the truck the valve body pressure contol valve is not opening to allow the front pump to force fluid into the valve body paths.
Doubt it has anything to do with the tranfer case.
Good luck.
the od light did not flash. the truck just completely stopped. What makes you so positive it is in the transmission? The truck will not move in 2H or 4H only 4L? its like there is somthing wrong there? maybe im missing something but doesn't the transfer case multiply the torque?
after further inspection turns out a shaft inside the transfer case is broke (did not see first hand a guy from a local shop told me) so hopefully this weekend ill be replacing transfer case and have a fully operational vehicle again!
im really sorry if i offended you! i really did not mean it in a disrespectful manner! i was just asking questions back? i am not with the vehicle so i could not answer any of those other then the ones that i could remember. but i am sorry if i offended you!
Per your reply #4, I would gave come to the same conclusion based on your return info because what happened for the truck to move in 4L was the front axle only was pulling the truck..
This kind of problem is not seen very often so on a board like this we have to lay it all out to have any chance of the right cause.
To ask why I thought it was the transmission was a bit premature like getting the wagon before the horse.
It was not a matter of me being insulted but your diaplay before we got into the matter.
Ive been on these boards and other many years and seen about all there is to see for replies, manners and attitudes, so I cut it off early to prevent head banging that helps no one.
You did the right thing going to a shop.
Good luck.
i understand! i am a little new to these kinda forums, im only 19 and have limited experience with forums other then reading the ones that people post that sound exactly like my problem. when nobody else had my problem i posted about it. but again i'm sorry for the way i posted!
