2.3 No start, no spark

89 2.3l 4x4 will crank just fine but no start. It is getting plenty of fuel. Replaced ignition module, crank sensor, computer, checked all fuses. I've been looking for a broken wire with no luck. Doesn't seem to be getting any power to the coil packs. Any ideas to try out?Truck was not driven very often until a month ago. Started up fine everyday until the no start. Thanks for any help!

Have you checked to see if it has fire at the plugs, and checked the timing belt?

No power to the coil packs so there's no chance of spark at the plugs. Timing belt is fine, pretty obvious when replacing the crank sensor. Timing is not manual on this truck in case that was your next suggestion.

The Hall Effect sensor in the distributor instructs the module to fire the coil.

See if this helps you:

It's a DIS so there is no distributor. It's at 2.3L with 2 coil packs. Neither have power going to them.

They had DIS in 1989? Huh, thanks....

I would look in a Chilton or Haynes book, I know one of those two has some pretty decent diagnostics for the non-DIS (EEC-IV) ignition, maybe they have similar for the newer stuff.

Well the body is an '89 for a fact, but from everything I've found, I'm startin to think the motor is a '90. Bought the truck from a friend who knows nothing about the history on it. This is my first time on a 2.3 like this. Turns out my multimeter was a POS, I'm getting power to the coil packs, ignition module, and crank sensor but still no spark. Stumped.

Have you pulled the computer codes?

Did a bit of googleing for 'dis ignition diagnostics' and found some stuff... eben though it doesn't have a distributor, it uses signals from crank & camshaft position sensors, instead.

The computer should know if it's having problems with those.

This is starting to sound like the PCM, but some thoughts.

You said that it's getting fuel, but the pump should shut off after 2 sec until the PCM knows that the engine started (crank signal ?). If it keeps running that's possibly the PCM

- does the PCM have power? I think that it gets 12v through the EEC relay just like the injectors and the coil packs, but from a separate wire.

- If you can get to the cam and crank sensor outputs with a dvm, you MIGHT be able to see that they change.
- analog ( needle) meter would be better
-scope would be the best

Crank and Cam signals have to be in sync to cause firing. Don't know what the pattern is, and you definitely need a good scope to see it. (probably a storage scope). The PCM might not have any codes for sensors not in sync.

Good Luck,

hj

In spite of the fact you say it gets fuel have you tried giving it a shot of starting fluid to see if it will fire up and then stall when it's used up the starting fluid? You could have fuel but low fuel injection pressure. I know it has been mentioned already but how old is the timing belt? May have jumped a cog or two( old/stretched/missing cogs you can't see) and is now so far out of time it won't crank. Have you checked compression/plugs/wires/ ?

Starting fluid was one of the first things I did even before checking for spark. Timing belt is fairly new. Plugs and wires arent going to make a difference if there's no power going through them.
