Ranger often wants to idle at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm. I'm glad its got a clutch! This is a long term intermittant problem that is getting worse. I have replaced the the IAC twice. No help. I have unplugged the IAC when the engine is in high idle and the engine idles normally. But, starting the car with the IAC unplugged makes car run rough. That makes me think the IAC is not getting the right voltage input from the pmc (eec). Mine is a 2002 with the 3.0 engine. Throttle plate seems to be closed.
What sense inputs does PMC use to determine idle air position? Also replaced TPS sometime ago but that didn't help either.
Sometimes turning off the a/c will knock the idle back to normal but not always. Turning the car off completely usually resets idle. But the high idle comes right back after accelerating.
Drove the car today and idle would stick and stay high when clutch pushed in coming to a light. However. as the car slowed to a stop the idle would come down when rolling 1-2 mph. ??

Reason: additional info
I have the same thing when rolling, my 3.0 will idle at 1500 ish rpm, sometimes 2k and when i stop it goes back down to 850. this is normal,
i think it have something to do with brakes and power steering to handle any sudden moves when rolling. but yours idles higher than it should, don't know what it might be. vacuum leak somewhere maybe? or leaking intake gasket.
that may cause high idle.
Oh mine is a manual too, don't have A/C tho
How many miles are on your truck? Where are you at in terms of routine maintenance - thing like replacing plugs and wires and similar items? Is the MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor) clean? Is the check engine light on? If so have you read the codes? If you don't have a code reader, most auto parts stores will read the codes at no charge. If you have codes, post them here so we can be of more help to you?
Bought a PCV valve Watched a you tube video on replacing it but can't find one on my truck. Looking behind engine for an in-line valve. Any other location.? Do all 2002 Rangers with 3.0 have one?
Found the pcv valve and replaced it. No help. Still idles at 3000 with the air off and 2500 with the air on. Pull up to a stop and sometimes the idle comes down. Sometimes it doesn't.
I removed the positive battery cable for two minutes to reset computer. NO help. The pcv hose and the grommet the valve fits in seem to allright. I have looked but not found any other vacuum leaks.
Truck has 165,000 miles on it. It now has a new IAC valve and PCV valve. Plugs have less than 20,000 miles on them and the engine runs smooth without hesitation. Just runs too fast at idle.
Sprayed off the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner. No help. Removed cleaned and replaced speed sensor at rear axle. No help. Idle still hangs up 2500 to 3000 rpm. Often will return to idle after pulling to a stop but not always. Sometimes moving AC to off position will make idle return to normal but not always.
Take it to a shop and get it checked with a smoke machine. That is the fastest and most consistent way to find vacuum leaks, including those in the intake manifold itself.
