Sloppy steering

Ford used some joints in the front ends of these things that went to pot pretty early. All those should be gone, but you still have to check every joint and connection to start with. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth, and starting at the steering shaft connector (rag joint, if so equipped, some are slightly different), look at every connection all the way out to the tie rod ends and the axle pivots themselves.
If your box is worn out, time to replace. I've read a couple cautions here about trying to tighten the boxes up. Not sure what the exact problem is, but the posters were adamant about not doing that.

FWIW, I've actually had good success adjusting the slack out of the steering box.
But, eventually there's a point where further adjustment is counter-productive.
The Haynes manual gives the proper procedure.
