i think i found me a good deal on a 1960 Ford 1 1.5 ton truck. it has a 292? Y block v8. can you tell me what model number that would be and what the bolt pattern and tires size from the factory it would be?
Look at the rear axle and figure out how to get the drums off....it's the labor that costs a lot.
These things like to poop out the wheel cylinders, especially if they've been sitting much.
My dad used to just pull the whole set of duals, hub and drums all as one to do the brakes. Probably why the cylinders pooped out, maybe the drums were beyond spec....
Now of course, you can find 19.5 wheels with a 6 on 8.75" pattern used for a lot less than the $1800+/- they cost new. And maybe you can run caps for tires for less than the $288+ per copy I found them for....
But back to square one here. Is this a "fun truck" that you're going to make into a big pickup truck or some other silly *** project?
Or is this a working truck that you need to support your business?
Either way, while I am fond of that era of truck, (we had a '58 F600 on the farm) there are some serious challenges to bringing one from the scrap yard gate back into profitable commercial service, or into anything remotely practical otherwise. Tires and brakes are the foundation, and you can see how much that can cost....
Well, fun costs money sometimes, and you will be haveing a lot of "fun".
IMO, a later model F350 would be the way to go. The FE motor is a lot easier to deal with for parts and real power than the y block. (sorry y fans....) The the rest of the truck is easier to deal with--NAPA has most service and brake parts for example.
Sounds like a fun project. Please post pictures, we all like pictures!
I don't know anything about the 3116 Cat. but you will need to change the rear end for one with a diesel friendly ratio..... unless that roadranger 10 sp has a double over drive.
Almost completed installing a cummins 6AT turbo diesel in my 59 F350. Changed the hubs to 8 lug as well. This will be a very useable rig, but not exactly oriuginal. That's why my build thread on the 57-60 page is called, 'kinda like a hotrod but it isn't hot'. A lot of on my thread, but I talk a lot and at least you might like the pics anyways.
