I'm looking for a s/a dump truck.I have Mack's and other old trucks, but have seen some good deals on 1980's Fords. Most seem to have 429's in them. How's the reliablility of them, also what type of MPG's with a 5/2 speed rear setup?
I cannot tell you much about the reliability yet, but I have a 1991 F-800 with 429 5 plus 2 speed set up that is getting a dump bed put on it. From what I have talked to people these trucks get from 6-8 mpg hauling 10 ton of rock. This is hauling from a quarry that has 4 different 8% grades to go over if this helps. I can give you some exact numbers when I get my truck back in a couple of weeks.

Thanks very much for the info!Deff. would like the numbers when you get them.Doesn't seem much more worse than a BB pickup!
we had an F700 with that engine in it and a big ole utility box on the back with 1000 gallons of water tanks and pulled our drilling rig , truck and trailer weighed close to 40,000 pounds loaded ! it pulled OK in town on flat land wernt worth a hoot pulling up hills ! it got around 4-5 MPG loaded !
now with the high cost of gas I would look for a diesel and stay away from any gas engine in a medium truck !
the durability seemed good with maintenance !
9.35 ton on a 700 truck.. WOW. That truck was heavy. I remember driving mine at 24-25K and it seemed like the limit.. 4 more ton would be nuts.. Must be pretty flat terrain?
add:
Ahh - F800, and 91, with fuel injection.. Must help the MPG's
