I think they should be both V-belt driven, so I don't see any reason why they should not exchange. Try looking up the replacements on an online parts catalog, and see if they refer to the same replacement part.

Yes. The only 79's that had a different pump were the Mustangs, these had the first reverse rotation pumps if I'm not mistaken. Now, if you want a high volume pump, get one for a police or taxi application or one listed for "extra cooling"
The water pumps that turned in reverse were on the engines with the single serpentine belt.

The 79-85 reverse pumps are exactly like the std rotation pumps, with the exception of the impeller. They use the std rotation timing covers. Beginning with the 86 model year, Ford revised the timing cover and the pump body for the reverse rotation setup to improve the flow. These were used on the Mustangs, pickups and vans only.
