Who has used Seafoam and is it worth it?

My 1986 Bronco with 302 has 156000 miles on it has no weird noises from the motor but does seem to have some blow by (air box has a little oil in it) So I was wondering if using Seaform would hurt any or could I benefit from it, as it states in the ad "frees up rings"

So who has used it and did it make any difference in your opinion???

 

I used it once a couple of years ago and could not tell any difference. No blowby nor oil added between changes at 192K. Mobil Clean High Mileage 10W-30.

 

I like Seafoam, but only use it in the fuel system to clean carbon off the valves and pistons. I will use Marvel Mystery oil in crankcase to clean up lifters. You have to be carefull what you wish for when cleaning engine deposits. Too harsh of chemicals can break stuff loose that may clog oil pickup. I've had Seafoam clean a fuel tank so good it started leaking after uncovering pin holes. Make sure your PCV system is in proper working order.

 

i dont see any reason to run it given the info you provided to us.

i would look at replacing your pcv valve and the little tiny filter under the main intake filter.

ive used it many years ago and it did well to clean up the motor. I unhooked the vac line going to the brake booster and had it pull into the intake that way. just understand that doing it this way you will need to change the oil and plugs after.

 

Thanks for the replys, i quess it only makes sense to change the plugs after as all that crap being forced out the tail pipe.

 

get that pcv valve changed. this will help with the blowby into the intake.

 

I have used Seafoam in the past in 60s-mid 90s vehicles and the engines always seemed to help with rough idles and basically "smooth" out a bit more. I used the brake booster method as well, just be careful to not choke out the engine by using too much at once.

Oh and by the way, you definately want to perform this outdoors because you will be amazed at the smoke cloud it will produce the first time you use it lol.

 

The engine is supposed to stall when you use the brake booster method, so don't worry if that happens.

 

I don't love Seafoam, I keep doing it because people push for it so hard.. I tried testing different 'cleaners' on gas crud, carbon deposits from old oil, egr exhaust crud buildup in the throttle body, etc...
I would wipe with the stuff, soak dirty parts or flakes of carbon deposits. Other than carb cleaner (which I wouldnt put in my oil, or even much through my intake), the only one that cleaned really, really well was Marvel Mystery Oil, and it cleaned everything well, exhaust, oil and gas. If I put a carbon flake from my oil into a small bowl of the stuff, it would completely dissolve in only a couple of hours. I can coat the inside of my intake with it and then wipe it down, it only takes two treatments to make it spotless.

True story, a bottle of marvel mystery oil clogged my fuel filter with black crud in less than half a tank of gas.

However, I have heard that seafoam doesn't work in a liquid state for soaking and stuff like that, that under pressure or misting or with heat and friction it does its job well.. that doesn't really fly for me. However, it's fun to watch your truck suck through a bottle.

on the other hand, Seafoam deep-cleening lubricating foam stuff? I absolutely love it.. cleaned up my door hinges, window tracks and my throttle body really nicely. The stuff absolutely kills for squeaky or seized stuff, and it dries so you don't have to worry about it crudding up a week later like WD40.
