I have heard that you should only add Techron, and other fuel system cleaners, BEFORE an oil change. Any truth/reason behind this? Does the use of these products somehow contaminate the oil?
I have read a couple magazine articles saying this was the case and I am pretty sure the bottles says so too.
Kind of makes sense, since the Techron is supposed to be a fairly agressive cleaner and presumably some of the dirty stuff washed out gets past the rings and into the oil.
Doesn't hurt to do this before an oil change. I have seen a couple other brands like Valvoline Syn Power saying the same thing.
If the manufacturer says it is a good idea to do, then usually I go with their advice.
In theory probably not a bad idea, to change the oil afterward, seeing as how the concentrate is about 5X normal levels found in Chevron & Chevron/Texaco gasolines & it's supposed to tidy things up in ONE tank full.
If your not in such a hurry, just use 5 or so tanks, of either of the two above gasolines, without the added Techron Concentrate & you won't have to worry about it!!!!
Now if you were to use something else, thats to be ingested in mass, via a vacuum line on the intake side, or pressureized & through the fuel rail, I'd sure change the crankcase lube afterward!!!! Probably pull & check the plugs afterwards too.
As Jim said, if the manufacturer recommends changing the oil afterwards, I'd sure do it!!!
