Cleaning out engine with seafoam

I just read some info about seafoam, never heard of it until now. Recently my trucks performance and gas mileage have gone down hill, I just changed the oil then added some complete fuel cleaner I believe made by stp that they say to use only every 4,000 miles, this seemed to help for a while until about the 2nd tank of gas I added after that, I checked my oil because I was going on a long trip and it was pretty dark and it is pretty new oil maybe 500 miles at the most. I figure that the cleaner cleaned some junk out in the engine and deposited it into the oil and since its still in the oil my performance is going back down hill. I dont have the money to do a tune up yet on my truck I just lost my job and cant afford the 12 mpg that its currently getting. Can anyone explain how to use seafoam on my 99 f150 with the 5.4L v8. I stumbled across a website where it explained how to use it on a camaro and it was saying things like remove some vacuum hoses and slowly feeding seafome into the hose while the engine is running. Anyone know the best way to use it and if I need to feed it through any vacuum hoses which ones they are. Thanks

Also any other suggestions to get the performance and mileage back up withought breaking the bank. And what is a pcv how easy and expencive is it to replace I'v heard its something you want to replace if getting bad gas mileage.

ssKable; The best way you can use the seafoam is to do as the bottle says
& to just modify their formula just a tad (cost may be a slight issue ) list of
required items 3 cans of seafoam the deepcreap & one can of 3M throttle plate
cleaner & last on the list one new motorcraft fuel filter : use as follows replace fuel filter then 2 of the 3 cans of seafoam in the fuel tank & make sure you have only about 1/4 or less of a tank of fuel put the two cans in the tank then fill tank to the neck with a high quality fuel like shell V POWER highly
recomended. Then spray down the pcv valve with the 3M cleaner let it soak if necessary the replace valve, now do the seafoam in the oil 2oz of it. Now here comes the slight mod to the bottle way instead of letting the seafoam sit in the engine for 10 min let it sit for an hour & then go back & let the engine sip down (thru the pcv vaccume line) another 3oz slowly & respray with the deepcreap then let it sit for 30 min then do as the bottle says to drive the vehicle for 5 to 10 miles at a safe highway speed. After the spirited drive change the oil within 100 miles of the cleaning. And again I would recomend another fine shell product the rotella T 5-40 synthetic & as the miles go by you will find power that the engine always had but was not being maximixed. In 6K miles do the seafoam treatment again & use about 4 to 5oz in the oil this time & drive for 200to300 miles till next oil change. Mileage, power, emissions & quietness should all improve more than a noticeable amount.

sskable; The pcv valve is on the passangers side valvecover almost halfway thru the
length of the cover it has a vaccume line running to it & plugs into the cover it self,as
far as it's main function it recycles the crankcase air back again thru the combustion
process where the cats process this air to help reduce emissions henceforth positive crankcase ventalation ( P C V ). A good old fasion air pump would be superior but is no longer cost effective.

Kable,

You have a '99. How many miles on it? Have you done the routine maintenence as prescribed by the owners manual? This is where you should start. Unless you have a specific DTC (diagnostic trouble code) to address "catching-up" on your routine maintenence is a MUST.

If you are due for a PCV valve, I'd suggest also replacing the vacuum hose (that runs to the TB) and its "elbo" connecter as well. These have been known to cause vacuum leaks (which in turn cause "lean condition" and driveability problems).

Cost?... I think the PCV valve is under $10 bucks. And the vacuum hose with "elbo" which connects to the back of the TB (only available from Ford) under $20 bucks. How easy to replace? Just "pull" out the old and "push in" the new.

Good Luck,
Bill

My truck has something like 106,000 miles on it. Last tune up I had was at 84000 and they replaced all the coil packs cleaned the fuel injectors replaced the fuel filter and checked out the engine to make sure nothing was wrong, I told them I was getting some poor fuel mileage, like 12mpg got it back up to about 15 after that. I know I need a regular tune up done but I dont have the cash, I have been unemployed had to move to a new area where there are more jobs got a job but it doesn't start for a month and I now have to commute longer then I did before, like 25 miles to work, before only like 3 miles. Soon as I get enough cash I am deffinatly getting a tune up but was just wondering some cheap things I could do in the meantime to boost things up a little. Thanks for all the info.
