Temp gauge issues!

I have a 89 bronco with the 4.9 engine. When i bought it the temp gauge didnt work. I replaced the engine coolant gauge by the termostat ( before doing any research on it). Ive read there is another sensor that directly links to the temp gauge? Is that right? I have a feeling i just wasted 20 bucks for the wrong sensor!!! Can anyone shef some light on this??? Where is this other sensor located at on the i-6? Thanks

Any one??? The gauge does twitch when i start the truck!

Is there a sending unit above the starter and below the head gasket, on the side of the block?
