I have an 02 5.4L 2wd excursion. It was running rough for months, replaced the fuel filter, new spark plugs and coils, it ran great. I ran it out of gas accidentally because I had no gauges due to an electrical wire rubbing in my steering column. Fixed the wire, replaced the fuel pump and viola, running again. A week later it stalled just 100 yards from my house. It turns over but won't completely start unless I hold my hand over the MAF sensor and cup it to try to keep it running. If I touch the gas pedal it cuts out immediately. I have replaced the cam sensor, the crank sensor, the MAF sensor, the throttle positioning sensor, and nothing. It will running if I spray starter fluid in for a few seconds, but it seems to freak out and die if too much air can get through. I have a mechanic in my driveway who is scratching his head and can't figure it out either. My husband is threatening to make me get another car, so please help me ASAP. I'm running put of money and ideas. Fuel pump registers good pressure. Help.
What about the fuel pressure regulator? The fuel pump can be pumping like gangbusters but if the pressure regulator isn't allowing the fuel rails to maintain the correct pressure, you lean-starve the engine.
That sounds like it could be what you're experiencing.
