I'm told by the dealer that I have a warped degas bottle. I'm having trouble locating a Ford part number for that item and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.
I've tried "Overflow Bottle", "Coolant Tank", "Coolant Reservoir" and none of them seem to look like what I think is the "degas bottle". (If I'm not mistaken, the "degas bottle" is located directly in front of the driver position and is mounted off the firewall is used as the coolant system high-point.)
I was also quoted $3000 to replace the bottle, oil cooler, and EGR cooler. And they said that the head gaskets might need to be replaced too, but that wasn't part of the cost. They quoted $1579.69 in parts, and 11 hours of labor. So I called a diesel specialist and ordered a EGR delete/Oil Cooler replacement kit and am planning the install myself. I just need the bottle before I begin.
Welcome to FTE. Take some time to read the tech folder at the beginning of the 6.0 forum for EXCELLENT information regarding your project. Lots of help and great guys here.
Warped degas bottle.........I guess they mean the sealing surface where the cap screws on???
Try partsguyed.com or Tousley Ford. Either one of them will know exactly what you need and their prices are excellent.
You also might want to look into WHY that bottle got so hot it warped! Do you have gauges? Do you know what your oil and water (coolant) temps are? You just MIGHT have lifted your heads and sent very hot water back thru your coolant system into the degas bottle like I did.
Do you tow or work your truck hard? Have you seen your temp gauge on dask suddenly go to HOT them immediately back to NORMAL?
If these things have happened don't just do a 1/2 a job.... pull the heads and replace the torque to yield bolts with ARP studs while you already have it apart.
I wish I could answer that question. I just bought this truck about 1200 miles ago and didn't uncover the problem until the 1000 mile/30 day warranty expired.
I tow with it occasionally. I tow my Jeep Cherokee on a 20 ft/12000 trailer (about 2200lbs + 5000 lbs for the jeep). My previous 2000 F350 had no trouble with it. I've towed only once with this new rig, and while I didn't overheat (according to the stock dash gauges), I did smell coolant the entire time, although only from the overflow bottle, not from the exhaust.
Normally I use it to haul trash on the weekends. The only reason I bought it was because I kept getting my 2wd 2000 F350 stuck... like in gravel driveways.
The first time I overheated, I was driving from the gas station to my home, a distance of about 4 miles. As soon as it went red, I let off the accelerator and the needle started to drop. It was a very warm day (100 degrees or so), and I assumed that was the issue. That and the fact that I was low on coolant (I checked after I nursed it home). The next time it happened, I was coming back from the dump (12 miles away). It didn't overheat, but it got close to the red (cause I was watching it like a hawk after the first time), and made it back. This time the coolant level was okay (at least there was coolant in the bottle).
After that, I drove it to the dealer without any problems.
And that's all the history I have with it.
