I know this has been touched on here more than a few times, but has anyone recently had there studs replaced. The dealer quoted me about 1000 bucks or so to replace them. If the manifold is shot would it be a better upgrade to headers? I know there are 4 studs busted so far. Any help guys would be great. Thanks.
Rusted! Those r broke off! Lol. I also have two broken studs on the right manifold and 1 on the left. Isn't leaking or ticking like crazy yet. All the ones that are still in tact look just like yours. A rusty ready to break mess. Lol. 1000$ is right on. Most shops won't even quote it b/c they don't know how many will break off inside the head during the job. I know some swear by headers and some say they don't notice a ton of performance diff. Every1 I talk to says to def do th y pipe as that is the root of the issue. Personally. I'm Gunna put on dorman manifolds , new gasket , stainless bolts and a SPD ypipe. Not now but eventually.
A grand from the dealer is not surprising. My dad got his done a few years ago for $400 from a local shop. I went with headers on mine before I had any issues. I still got my manifolds, they are like new yet. Your better off going with a set of long tube headers with the included y-pipe. Get rid of the entire cluster*%&#.
Would like to know this answer too. Notice that my studs are a little rusted when I changed the brakes.
Looks like you have leaks also.(Not good) You should be able to grab ahold of the broken studs with a vise grips or weld on a nut and turn them out once the manifold is off. The real PITA part is when they break off flush with the head.
That's how they look when the break naturally. I've heard of people getting them out with left hand drill bits. But even if u did that and just replaced those the gasket is shot and the others are on there way to breaking also. Once u drop the manifold vice grips and heat will do the jon. Any that break flush will have to be built up by welding and then removed. No short cuts on this 1 really. It's a PITA job.
What is the option if you break it off flush? Drill and tap? How do you drill a steel stud from a aluminum head?
I think maybe the previous owner tried to take these nuts off and snapped the studs and then gave up before they broke any more.
Other than taking the fender plastic and wheels off can the manifold be replaced without too much extra labor?
Center punch stud, drill with left hand drill and extract with EZ out. Or you can plug weld a nut onto the broken stud end. Or you can drill the stud out completely, drill and tap hole oversize for a helicoil. Going the helicoil method can be a problem if you go to deep and hit the water jacket or other passage. Best bet is to back the stud out.
Its not uncommon for the studs to shear off and the nut fall off. The manifolds that I pulled off of my V10 are stainless and are quite long, thus they expand and contract quite a bit from heats cycles. The studs on my truck were stainless, same with my dds, they just sheared off. Extra labor depends on how much the studs fight to come out. Some mechanics do not wan to remove the fenderwell liners even though its much easier to work with them removed.
