I have Been trying To remove the Crank pulley from my flatty with no luck! I have tried a 7 ton gear puller with no luck just bends the pulley, I have tried heating it up as well. I am not worried about damaging the pully as all I need is the crank. But I would like to know the correct way so when I pull the one I plan on reusing, it will be straight.

 

There is only the bolt on the end of the crank snout that keeps it in place. It has a keyway that keeps it from turning, but otherwise it just slides on the shaft. Heat, lube and maybe a prybar against the crank end of the pulley.

Drop the oil pan and the timing gear cover and you should be able to get behind it.

 

Don't be shy with the hot wrench, get it good and warm all the way around.

 

Guess it's time to break out the rosebud!

 

You want to heat it fast, before the crank can absorb heat and start to expand (maybe this is obvious, but...)

 

Amazing what can be accomplished with the proper application of the hot wrench, sledge!

 

Congrats! The penetrating oil doesn't seem to have made it deep in there? That usually is the case.

 

Wow, never seen one rusted on that bad......at least you got it off!

 

That's all fine and good, but what if your plan is to reuse the pulley??? That one looks to be down for the count.

 

That pulley was already damaged, I have another one on my broken crank that is good. So the real challenge will be removing that one without damage.

 

If you figure out the trick, let me know. I'm still scratching my head on this one. I'm used to balancers with bolt holes in them. ;-)
