My rigth side rear axle wheel seal leaking. How do I remove the axle to take the rear hub and replace the wheel seal? All the input will be greatly appreciated.

This would be a full-floating axle, so you remove the axle by taking off the 8 bolts on the hub and the axle will pull out. But you have to remove the drum to get to the seal - I have not worked on one this new but the older trucks had a ring nut inside that you had to unscrew to take the drum off.

1997 ford f350 4x4 rear axle removal

I removed all the 8 axle bolts but the alxe wont pulled out. How do I determine if my rear end is full float or semi full float. And what is the different between the two?If my rear end turn out to be semi full float is that mean that the alxe has a keeper inside the the diff?

F350s never came with a semi-floating rear axle that I know of.

Semi-floating

Full Floating

Sometimes those axles need a little persuasion to come out.

Your axle may be a 10.5" instead of the earlier model 10.25", but they are basically the same. Here is a writeup from another forum:

That's a little different than what I have worked on, the older trucks don't have a removeable drum like that, but no matter, you still have to pull the hub to replace the seal. On the older trucks the drums and hub are integrated.

F-350s and F-250s have always had full floater rear axles. Every heavy duty truck I've ever had, '74,'75 F-350s, '80 F-350, '99 F-250, '94 D3500, and '95 F-350 have all had full floaters. I just snapped a pic of the hub on my '95 F-350:

So just take those 8 bolts off the hub, unbolt the drum shoe bracket off the axle, and slide the axle out. The seal is right there at the end of the axle tube. You might be able to just remove the axle shaft and get to the seal, I don't recall

There is also a gasket behind the axle shaft flange, and it can be pretty stubborn. A hammer and chisel usually is able to pry it loose. It may be even more stubborn if someone else has already been in there with some silicone! But definitely put some black RTV silicone back on the flange when you bolt it back together

correction to superdutymj....

I have 2 F250's a 88 and 89 that have semi's in them. I am guessing there was probably a regular F250 and a HD F250. Only the HD's have full floaters. I also have a 88 F-250 HD with a full floater.

X2 I also thought the F250/350s always had full floaters until I was educated from the posts on this forum.

To the OP.

Chock the front tires.

Jack up the rear axle.
Remove tires.
Remove drum
remove 8 axle bolts
Remove axle(may need some persuation w a hammer, it is sealed w an o-ring)
remove wheel bearing nut and outer bearing(need special socket for nut)
remove hub.

Install is the reverse.

They make a different style seal that what may be on my hub now. Ford used a wear sleave that was pressed on the spindle and the seal wore on that.

Chicago rawhide and other make what they call a SCOTSEAL. it is a seal that spins within its self for a better seal. Napa carries the CR seal # # 34387
