how many different 4R100 trans

I have a 99 5.4L 4X4 Expedition that needs a trans. It has a 4R100 with the XL3P-HB on the trans tag. I have a replacement found at the local salvage yard but the tag is gone. How do I know if it will work? I have been told that there is another 4R100 used that year with XL1P-DB on the tag. Any Experts out there know what the differences are on these transmissions. I did notice mine has 12 pins in the gear select switch and the salvage one has 11 pins, same connector I think. Also the one from the salvage yard apears to be a ford reman, there is a sticker on the converter.

The most important thing to know is what engine the trans had been mated to. There are two bellhousings for the 4R100. One for the 5.4L/6.8L, and one for the 7.3L. They are NOT interchangeable. You can use a trans from a 6.8L, it might shift just a bit firmer. You cannot use one from a 7.3L.

Different years had different sensors with different number of pins. Just change the sensor.
