Recently purchased a 1980 7000 3208 cat 5 and 2spd dump truck
havn't been able to lacate the vin tag (missing most of the dash on the passenger side), where would the original location be at? also having a issue with the brakes (hydraulic/vacuum), the vacuum pump seems to work fine and I can pump the brakes and hold pressure with the engine off but with the engine running the pedal will go pretty much go to the floor and only after pumping it quite a bit will I get it to hold pressure but it will just leak down with holding my foot on the pedal. doesn't seem to have any air in the lines have bled them off several times
any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks
The vin should be on the drivers door. As far as the brakes go. To me it sounds like you have a hydraulic fluid leak. Is the fluid level in the maser cyl. still full or going down? If you dont see a leak (dripping on the ground) you mayhave a leak in the master cyl or hydrovac. The reason the pedal goes down running is because its go alot more boost (vacumn), the when not running. Gotta love a kiddie cat plus a 2 sp. rear.
spent some time looking the truck over today and the only place that I have the vin number is on a sticker on the drivers door jam, I was looking for a metal tag of some kind, is this all they use for a vin now? a sticker
as for the brakes I'm not losing fluid that I can tell no fluid leaking out of the drums, went around and bled the brakes back first the the front with the engine not running seem to get good pedal pressure and all fluid coming out of the bleeders, then with engine running and good vacuum the brake pedal will go all the way to the floor, pumping the brakes will get some pedal back but seems to fade away with steady pressure. as of now I havn't adjusted the shoes yet, was hoping to get some pedal before trying to adjust the shoes
any idea, thoughts
Thanks
After 1980 (trucks), the VIN and myriad codes for the axle, trans, color, GVW and etc are located on the Certification Label which is glued to the B Pillar (door post).
The last year for the riveted onto the left (drivers side) door (below the latch or inside the glovebox door) metal Warranty Plate was 1980 (trucks).
The NHTSA mandated that all automakers change the VIN in 1981 to 17 digits (trucks, 1980 cars). This longer VIN (1961/80 FoMoCo truck was 11 digits), necessitated a new label.
It was also mandated that the label be somewhere else other than on the door.
People replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they did not install the original Warranty Plate on the replaced door.
When this occured, the VIN on the Warranty Plate no longer matched the VIN on the registration. All the codes on the Warranty Plate were moot, since they no longer matched the vehicle.
By law, there has to be a hidden VIN stamped somewhere, usually on the frame rail.
