I have this code at my truck last a few years. Not right now because negative battery terminal is on off, I'm changing heater core, blower resistor etc, but I'm sure code will come back because I have same symptom like before. I can press gas pedal only will say half way. If I go farther then it truck start hesitate and shake.
I checked this Forum and Internet it turn to be passenger side catalytic converter bad (BANK 1). Is BANK 1 passenger side.
Is it any one ever think to open converter and clean whatsoever plug it. I guess not possible to open but I can cat with grinder at half surrounding panel of cat and then rivet or bolt beck. Is it work?
OK what is this now. Is it possible that I have 4 catalytic converters, 2 per bank. What is number 1., and what is number 2.. What is cat before all, if someone can help.

Yes you have 4 converters, 2 on each side. If the converter is plugged it needs to be replaced not cut open and cleaned. Not sure which bank is which. If your converters are plugged it can cause major lack of power and backpressure on your engine.
Are we to understand you have had the code for some years without finding out what it is telling you?
Cats bank 1 is the passenger side.
You cannot clean them for two reasons.
They have rare metals on ceramic honeycomb substrates that you will likely break.
Fed regulation say you cannot try to alter them or a yard is not to even sell used ones.
The code 420 tells you the computer checks the switching ratio between the front and the rear sensors for that side and finds the ratio out of limits because the cats are not processing the exhaust properly with enough oxygen output the rear sensor detects as within limits.
A restricted cat system can cause exhaust valves to burn as well as loss of power because the cylinders on that bank cannot clean out and can even overheat..
The point the motor begins to protest is the point that bank can not pass exhaust with enough volume so what is left in the cylinders leaves no room for a fresh charge as exhaust gas will not burn the second time..
Replace the whole assembly.
It's not cheap but you have no choice.
Good luck.
I will go this way. Will go with universal cat at rear one. If that not solve problem I will replace front one too. I will clamp all together with band clamps. Worked well at flex pipe of my Acura. Universal cat cost 69$, complete pipe like one at photo is 300$. If that will work I would be capable easy replace cat always in future.
I actually new what mean P0420 just didn’t care too much and always drove truck with half gas. But must solve it one day.
Ok, first you must identify why the converter failed. The catalytic converters have no moving parts, and work on a chemical action. As a catalyst, the precious metals responsible are not altered in any way, they are not used or depleted. So if the vehicle is running properly, the converter will never fail. The converter should be capable of outlasting the engine. So you need to identify the cause of the original problem and fix it, otherwise you are going to have the same issue again.
A $69 cat is going to be a cheap unit that has very little precious metals. The el-cheapo cats are know to fail repeatedly without cause. You cannot get a good converter that cheaply. Not all converters are equal, the materials inside are costly, and the only real way to make them cheaper is to use less precious metals. A $69 converter will have between 6 to 8 grams of precious metals. You need at least 15 grams for a good reliable converter.
