Its almost that time again. I have learned that when you take the filter cap off it drains down. Well, i have my oil pressure gauge line connected to my filter top and I have to disconnect that first. The question is, will this be under pressure and spray oil everwhere, or can i just drop the oil out the pan to start with. Thanks.
your gauge would tell you if it was under pressure ( just saying haha) ,, but it is not ,, unless the truck is running but that would make changing the oil tricky lol
now this is funny..... sorry
but really heres the awnser,
first you should remove the oil filter, its only underpressure if the truck is running. do not remove if the truck is running.
next remove the drain plug.
not doing it this way can get you over full and not drain all the oil out.
You can either open the oil filter housing first or the drain plug first, it doesn't matter... just make sure that the drain plug is open when you open the oil filter housing (oil filter housing holds 1/2 -1qt of oil).
Since it takes a while to drain out 15 qts of oil (even when warm and I always change my oil when my motor is at operating temps)... I open the drain plug (or Fumoto valve in my case)...then remove the oil filter housing cap.
Let the housing drain (will take all of 2 seconds).... and by the time you remove the old filter, throw it away, remove the old O-ring, clean the cap, re-lube the new O-ring real well, snap new OEM/Motorcraft/Racor oil filter into the cap and install.... your good to go.... just re-seat and tighten the cap onto/into the oil filter housing.
Wait untill all your oil has fully drained... will take time for 15 qts... so drink a beer and watch it drain... seems like the last quart takes for ever!!!
While waiting, I prep my funnel, open up the filler tube, get my fresh oil ready and get another beer from the fridge. By now, I am probably ready to close the drain plug or Fumoto Valve and start the process of refilling with 14 - 15 qts of fresh/clean oil.
I persoanlly add 14 qts, start, run for 2 - 3 minutes, check for leaks, shut off, wait for 5 minutes and check oil level. I then add oil to bring to "full/max" mark on dip stick.
With the Fumoto valve, I drain my oil directly into old, empty oil jugs. Open the valve, fill the jug, close the valve, repeat. No messy drain pans and easy transport of the used oil.
