Test Procedure for TPS

I was looking at the Chiltons for testing the TPS, check resistance between two terminals and compare to the chart, the chart shows voltage?

Can someone clarify the test procedure....

There are three wires at the TPS.

One pin is Ground signal reference.
One pin is a Reference voltage from the EEC. Usually 5 volts DC
One pin is the Output signal voltage from the TPS which varies depending on the
position of the throttle body blade. At idle position the voltage will be around .5 volts DC.

When the throttle blade is at wide open position around 4.6 volts DC or higher.

To test the voltages at each wire, you need to strip back the insulation so
the probes can make contact with each wire or use a sewing pin to pierce the
insulation. You can also purchase a test pig tail plug which allows you to make the
voltage test measurements without cutting into the wires.

I don't think you can poke the meter test probes into the back of the connector
plug wires.

Example.

Set the meter to measure volts DC.
Turn ignition to ON. No need to start the engine.
Place one probe on the ground wire and the other probe on the Reference Voltage
wire. You should read close to 5 volts DC.

Place one probe on the ground wire and the other probe on the Output signal wire
and you should read around .5 volts DC when the throttle body blade is in the idle
position.

If you manually open the throttle body blade with your hand, the voltage should
slowly and smoothly increase. At wide open throttle the voltage will be 4.6 volts DC
or higher.

If you want to check the TPS using resistance measurements, you would unplug
the 3 wire connector at the TPS and set the meter to read Ohms.

Resistance measurements are performed with no external power applied to the
circuit. Only the power from the test meters internal battery is used.

Touch one probe to the ground pin of the TPS. Touch the other probe to the Voltage
reference pin. You should read the maximum resistance value of the TPS.

Touch one probe to ground and the other to the Signal output pin. You should
read a low resistance with the throttle blade at the idle position. If you manually
open the throttle blade to the wide open position, the resistance reading should
slowly and smoothly increase.

Do you know what these values are, I neeed to know if the TPS is faulty?

Ford Fuel Injection Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Have a read here. Should help along with the great description by F150.

This is the color of the wires that go to the TPS connector on a
88. I have no idea if they are the same for your vehicle.

Orange/White wire is the 5 volt reference voltage from the EEC.
Dark Green/Light Green is the Sensor output.
Black/White wire is the sensor ground.

With the connector disconnected from the TPS.

One probe on the Reference Voltage pin of the TPS and the other probe
to the Sensor Ground pin you should measure around 3.7 K ohms of
resistance.

One probe on the Signal output pin and one probe on Signal
Ground pin, you should measure around 1 K ohm with the throttle blade
in the idle position.

If you manually open the throttle plate the resistance should slowly and
smoothly increase to around 3.5 K ohms at wide open throttle.
