Question About not using the front tank

Hey guys,

My truck has dual gas tanks.
But I would like to use only the rear tank 99% of the time.

I think the best way to "store" a gas tank is full with some type of additive???
But I DO NOT want to pack a full tank of gas around all the time obviously. Too heavy.

How can I do this? Run around with an empty or very low front tank that's not in use? (without causing problems down the road)

Thx

Why not run one until it's ALMOST empty, then fill the other one and run it ALMOST dry, then switch back. This would keep a small amount of reasonbly fresh gas in at least one tank at all times, but wouldn't allow either tank to stay empty & collect moisture.

Well....idealy for me...I'd like to keep the weight of the gas at the ***-end of the truck. Given the choice.
Also....the fuel gauge gets all weird and jumps around when on the front tank....so I'd just as soon not use it.

But ya....the moisture thing is what I need to be concerned about right?

Likely you need a new sender/pump assembly in your front tank. It will cause the gauge to act weird. Seems pretty common on these trucks, it was on mine.

True....but I will never NEED 2 tanks.
So I'm trying not to spend cash on a tank I don't need. BUT, of course I don't want to ruin it either.

I know what you mean. My gauge would act weird on both tanks when I got my truck. I replaced the front sender/pump, but the rear one is still like that. That was 4 years ago. I hate to spend the $$$ to replace the rear one when I have one tank that works. I just run on the front tank all the time. I don't know what my back tank will look like when I do decide to fix it. Oh well, cross that bridge when I get there I guess.

It would be best if you kept the tank full, with a fuel stabilizer to keep the fuel from gelling. I personally think my truck handles and rides better with 2 full tanks, but if you really don't want to, then I'd keep a few gallons in it, and run a fuel stabilizer. You might want to confirm that the fuel stabilizer handles moisture as well. If not, add some Heet (alcohol) to avoid rust in the tank.

Every few months, run a half tank or more through, then repeat the process.

I can't use my front tank. It leaks pretty bad. Ideally I would use it most of the winterand leave the back one full for extra weight in the winter.I don't think I would leave the gas in more than six months before using it.I also wouldn't leave it bone dry.It will suck up more junk at the bottom of the tank and ya just don't know when you might get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

I have a complete '88 rear tank in good condition, among the other 1/2-a-garage-full of junk.

You're right.....pickups do ride better with a better weight distribution....which means ADDING weight to the back half. The pitfall to doing this intentionally(by running an extra tank full of gas)...is that you have to accelerate and decelerate that weight every day.

And ya.....I will most likely just run a tank full of fresh gas thru the front tank every mth or so.

Steve83,
Are you offering the rear tank for sale? Mine leaks badly, so I just use the front one, but it would be nice to have the rear one working.

Why not just use both tanks? Fill them both up and when they are empty fill them again. Less trips to the gas station…

Keeping a vehicle as light as possable increases fuel economy AND allows a vehicle to accelerate quicker for the same amount of throttle input.
This of course has to be balanced between how often you want to stop at the gas station and how light you want to be......I personally never "fill" a tank unless I'm hitting the hwy for a trip.....otherwise I only pump 40-50ltrs at a time.

Gasoline weighs roughly 5.6 pounds per gallon so what’s that 100 pounds per tank? Do you really think an extra 100 pounds is going to slow you down? I could see in a sports car where every pound counts, but not a truck. As far a MPG what would the extra 100lbs do, change it by .2 mpg (if that)?

In my car I can tell the difference if I have a passenger or not, but my car only weighs 2500lbs or so, and has only 100 foot pounds of torque (on a good day). I can't tell the difference if I have a passenger(s) in my truck.

BTW: I drive 150miles a day, with one tank I would have to get gas everyday! I fill them both!

Doug
