I have been chasing a CEL light on my 1994 Explorer for quite some time. The code is 214, cylinder identification failure. I have already replaced the crankshaft position sensor with no success. Can anyone tell me when Ford installed the camshaft position sensor on the 4.0 as this seems to be the next step. I have searched the engine and have found nothing that looks like the cps. Any help would be appreciated.
My Haynes manual does not show a cam position sensor for 91-94 Explorer V6 4.0L engines.
Think you may be barking up the wrong tree looking for this problem. You may want to look at the EDIS module (located behind the battery on the radiator bulkhead)/ coil pack/ and connections between EDIS and EEC module. Schematic shows a shorting bar between EDIS module pin 3 (pink wire) and EEC module pin36 (also Pink wire) but does not say what purpose it serves. Could be corroded/loose wire connection somewhere.

OK I did some more digging and found a link you may want to investigate. It is for detailed diagnostic tests for a 95 Explorer and shows a Camshaft position sensor and says it is located on the rear of the block near the engine centerline. The CID lead runs from the CMP sensor to EEC module pin 24, so If you connector has a lead on that pin, it has a sensor or possibly a variation (dummy) circuit not covered in Haynes manual. I did not check my EEC wiring harness for a lead, but can do so if you need to compare notes between 91-94 models.
I checked my 91 and found no sensor in the area indicated, nor any wiring harness running to that general area (unless it is inside the bell housing)
At any rate, the detailed tests should be useful to troubleshoot any fault codes on just about any model Ford EECIV system.
The file is PDF and around 200 pages long so it will take a while to load unless you have a high speed internet connection. Start on page 73 of the PDF file for CMP pinpoint test.
Hope this helps some:
