Question Please help '98 2.5L - P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor

I have a camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction error on my '98 2.5L Ranger. I have swapped the sensor, and also used my ohm meter to insure the wiring from the powertrain control module to the sensor is good. But I can't seem to get it fixed. I have actually swapped in two new sensors, so I suspect that a bad sensor is not the problem. Could it be that the powertrain control module is bad and reporting this error? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Shoot me an email (refer to link in my sig) and I'll send you a few pages of stuff that may help you pinpoint the problem.

I would send an email but I get this message:
"Email privileges are not enabled for your account. You must be a member of this site for at least 15 days and have at least 15 posts before you can use the email form to contact other members. This is due to abuse of the system by spammers and scammers."
Apparently I haven't known about the forum long enough to get full use of it.

Rockledge, I did the troubleshooting that you sent in email. All indication is the powertrain control module is bad.

Rock Auto offers remanned PCM's pretty cheap if you're budget is a little tight. Even a junkyard wouldn't be a bad option, IMO.

I called the dealership and they need a number off the current PCM and $340 to replace it and it will take about 3 days to get one. Rock Auto offers a return and repair option for the one I have and I emailed them for details. I will also pursue the junkyard option. Thanks.

I ended up getting a rebuilt PCM to get rid of the P0340 (camshaft jposition circuit malfunction). Truck is still not drivable. Starts out with a rough idle which smooths out, hitting the gas causes the engine to rev briefly and then cutback as though you released the gas pedal. Now reading P0171 SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1) as DTC error. Anyone with troubleshooting tips for this DTC?

Running lean. Usually means a vacuum leak (vacuum lines/hoses, PCV valve, intake gaskets, bad EGR, etc.) or fuel a delivery problem (low fuel pressure, clogged fuel filter or injector(s), bad pump, etc.).

Look up the code here: http://rockledge.home.comcast.net/Ra...llery/DTCs.pdf

Yea, I forgot that it get's kinda confusing when Ford gets into the Lean/Rich Codes stuff in the Manual. You actually want to look at DTC # P0175 whenever a lean or rich codes pops up.

Possible causes of a DTC P0171:

Fuel system

clogged fuel injector(s).
Low fuel pressure.
Contaminated fuel injector(s)

Ignition system

Spark plugs.
Spark plug wires.
Coils

Induction system

Air leaks after the MAF sensor assembly.
Vacuum leaks.
Restricted air inlet
PCV system.
Improperly seated engine oil dipstick.

Base engine

Oil overfill.
Cam timing.
Cylinder compression.
Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S(s).

Tips:

Check intake air system for leaks, obstructions and damage.
Check air cleaner element, air cleaner housing for blockage.
Verify fuel level.
Verify integrity of the PCV system.
Check for disconnected spark plug wires.
Check for vacuum leaks.
Verify customer did not run out of fuel.

I had to finally give up and take it to a local mechanic. He got me a replacement mass flow sensor at the junkyard and fixed me up. - RW
